A NEW DEAL IN ATHLETICS
Have we an Athletic Association ? I seem to recall having seen pictures in the Year Book each year, and the purpose as always stated is to foster interest in College athletics. Yet athletics at St. Rose are almost non-existent. Attendance at Riding Club has fallen off considerably—basketball games are few and far between—and the other sports in which girls normally participate are never even mentioned. It's time we started a little activity in this section, so here goes for a beginner.
Take off the woolen ear muffs and listen to some news of spring. Despite red noses, frost bitten hands, and general grumbling about the cold, our thoughts have turned to spring, and this year in addition to the usual young man's fancy, etc., we are turning to tennis. Do I hear any murmurs of approval ? Many a spring morning I've seen day students and boarders alike with a tennis racket under their arm heading toward Washington Park. Why not do this activity in an organized form ? We could really have a tennis team here at the college, and perhaps compete in intercollegiate circles.
Does this meet with your approval? We could have practice in the Vincentian gym about the first of April, and then in May hold a tournament in Washington Park. The best players would be picked for the varsity team, and other teams could be formed for inter-class competition. Watch the bulletin board and sign up. Let's start pepping up our Athletic Association.
ST. ROSE TO PLAY BASKETBALL GAME WITH ALBANY BUSINESS COLLEGE
The first basketball game for the 1936 season has been scheduled for March 4 against Albany Business College. The game will be played at the Y. W. C. A. court. The St. Rose team will be chosen from the following players: Mary Miller, Rosemary Ward, Grace Ryan, Mary Hayes, Betty Markham, Dot Markham, Eleanor Ostran-der, Joan McCormick, Jane Keeshan, Pat Moran, Rosemary Costello, Mickey Flynn.
INTERCOLLEGIATE DEBATING HEADS ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH
The Intercollegiate Debate Club is well on its way to another successful season this year. Last Wednesday, February 19, St. Rose met the Skidmore College team and creditably defended the affirmative side of die question, Resolved: "That the recent relief expenditure will prove detrimental to the character of the American people." Congratulations to Grace Corcoran and Catherine Sherritt for their splendid work.
On Friday of the same week, February 21, two men from Colgate invaded our cam-pus, but they met their match forensically at least, in the two members of our debate team. Dorothy Taaffe and Mary O'Connor defended the affirmative of the question. Resolved: "That the United States should participate fully in all sanctions which the League of Nations invokes against Italy.'' Colgate was represented by William Sanderson, '37 and Burdell Bixby, '36.
On this Friday night, February 28, St.
Rose meets the debaters from the College of Mount St. Vincent. They are to discuss the question, Resolved : "That the Congress of the United States should by a two-thirds vote overrule all decisions of the Supreme Court declaring Acts of Congress unconstitutional." The St. Rose team, consisting of Helen Wagner, '36, Anna Mary Gallagher, '37, and Jane Keigher, '37, will defend the affirmative side. This is to be a decision debate so be sure and be there. The debaters need your support. Show your College spirit and have the auditorium filled. Don't forget the date, February 28.
Before the next edition of The Arrow there will be another debate with a man's college. Be sure and hear the Niagara debate on March 6. Mary Hayes, '36, Glee Preston, '37, and Marie McAuliffe, '37, will represent St. Rose.
Watch the bulletin board for further activities in this field.
Memento!
That every college needs the support of a loyal group of collegians. You give this loyal support when you speak kindly of faculty members and fellow students; when you give to your Alma Mater the need of praise due from them; when you support whole heartedly and with some little sacrifice to yourself every project proposed for the betterment of your College; when you endeavor to secure new students to take your place and carry on the work after your name has been transferred to the list of Alumnae; when you willingly obey college regulations and make yourself a real member of the family of your Alma Mater; etc., etc.
That overcrowded schedules make for superficial work and frequently result in D's and E's. Besides, they complicate the
general program, make conflicts for others whose schedules are normal, and seriously handicap the Faculty Committee in the arrangement of the program of studies.
That Ash Wednesday is here and now is the time to think about your Lenten sacri-Mass for that day. A chastened soul will fice. Take your cue from the Gospel in the be a far more acceptable gift to our Risen King than an emaciated body.
That The Arrow is being published to furnish an opportunity for the expression of student opinion on any subject that may be of interest both to Faculty members and Student Body. Make your contribution in order to insure its success.
